A NOTE ON TRANSLITERATION
In the body of the text, we use the conventional transliteration for names and locations. However, for the notes, bibliographic information, and terms that would be of importance to scholars, we use a simplified version of the Library of Congress system of transliteration, omitting ligatures for those Cyrillic characters that are rendered by more than a single Latin character. In addition, the Ukrainian soft sign “ь” has been omitted in the body of the text but is retained in the notes, where it is rendered with a prime. For example, Львів is transliterated as “Lviv” in the body of the text and as “L’viv” in a footnote.
